Event Description

Opening Monday, May 9 at 6:00PM and running through June 10 “Impact!” will showcase collaborative research and design projects from Parsons School of Design that address issues of major social concern and offer solutions through unexpected design approaches. This exhibition will feature multi-disciplinary projects ranging from product design, lighting design, fashion design, and strategic design management concepts. Exhibited projects to include:

-Design for Care: collection of garments designed with care of use in mind. A collaboration between Parsons and Tide. Explores how design transforms the way we use, launder, repair, alter and wear our clothes.
-Freshkills Pop Up: modular sun shade for Freshkills Park in Staten Island in partnership with New York City Parks and the Freshkills Park Alliance.
-Break for Play: Explores design’s role is to assist in the planning of future conditions through LEGO and other tools of play.
-Local Studio: Made in New York: An exploration of product design, production, and distribution in localized contexts, with emphasis on low-volume self-production and the use of CNC technology as well as manual labor
-MasterCard x Parsons Hackathon – Top 3 Projects: Merging fashion and technology, these projects offer commerce connectivity solutions via embedded payment functionality into products, new designs or concepts.
-Blind Spots: A presentation of a series of independent projects on the intersections of race, architecture and the city, Blind Spots represent spaces that may not be observed under certain circumstances.

This first-time partnership between Parsons School of Design and the South Street Seaport will kick off the Downtown Design Festival, a 14-day series of events and activations celebrating the extraordinary explosion in design and creative energy in lower Manhattan over the past decade.

Parsons Festival is an annual series of art and design events in which cutting-edge student work is presented to the Parsons community and the public. The festival takes place at the end of each academic year and includes thesis exhibitions and critiques, thought-provoking public programs, interactive installations, gallery openings, workshops, and special events.
